Zakharova responds to Vance’s comments on Russia and China’s position on Iran

23.06.2025, Moscow.

US Vice President J.D. Vance, in stating that Russia and China do not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons, failed to mention their condemnation of Israeli and US aggression against Iran, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova wrote on June 22 on her Telegram channel.

“Russia and China speak for themselves: relevant statements condemning Israeli and US aggression have been published by the foreign ministries of both countries,” she wrote.

Zakharova stressed that anyone making statements on behalf of Russia and China without authorization should understand that both Moscow and Beijing are primarily opposed to any interference by Washington in their internal affairs.

She also emphasized that both Russia and China uphold the position that Iran, like any other country, has the right to independently determine how to develop its nuclear energy sector, as long as it complies with international law.

“Iran has been developing peaceful nuclear energy, which it has every right to do, and has not created nuclear weapons — a fact repeatedly confirmed by both Tehran and the IAEA,” the diplomat noted.

Zakharova also pointed out that Israel is the only country in the Middle East known to possess nuclear weapons, and for decades has ignored initiatives to create a nuclear weapons-free zone in the region. Now, together with the US, it is bombing Iran — a country without nuclear weapons.

Israel began launching strikes on Iranian territory during the night of June 13, claiming it was to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. US aircraft struck Iranian nuclear facilities during the night of June 22.
