Russia and Venezuela will create a working group to counter sanctions, announced Venezuela’s Deputy Minister for Anti-Sanctions Policy, William Castillo, on June 21 at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2025), RIA Novosti wrote.
According to him, both countries have already appointed co-chairs: from Russia, the Ministry of Finance; from Venezuela, its Ministry for Anti-Sanctions Policy.
“We are implementing the memorandum signed by the foreign ministers of the two countries last year,” Castillo noted. He added that the first meeting of the working group will take place in the coming months. The main objective is to develop measures to neutralize anti-Russian and anti-Venezuelan sanctions, which have amounted to over a thousand restrictions in recent years.
He stressed that despite pressure from the US and EU, Moscow and Caracas are demonstrating resilience and finding effective methods of cooperation.
In 2019, Washington imposed restrictions on the Venezuelan oil company PDVSA, severely impacting Venezuela’s economy. Since the beginning of the special military operation in 2022, the West has imposed 17 sanction packages against Russia, and on June 18, French President Emmanuel Macron announced new EU measures.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously noted that sanctions harm those who impose them, yet they continue to be used as a tool of pressure.
