Russia does not have such a task – to retake the city of Sumy, but such a possibility is not ruled out, it may become part of the security zone that Russia wants to create in Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a plenary session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on 20 June.
Answering a question about the area of the security zone that Russia is creating in Ukraine, the Russian leader said that it is 10-12 kilometers in the Sumy region.
“In Sumy region the depth is somewhere from 10 to 12 kilometers, somewhere there 8, 10, 12 kilometers. Further the city of Sumy, the regional center. Well, we do not have such a task to take Sumy, but, in principle, I do not rule it out,” Putin replied.
The Russian leader explained that the logic of actions of the Russian armed forces is dictated by the threat posed by Kiev, constantly shelling the border territories.
