The European Union’s new tariffs on fertilizers from Russia will create difficulties for European farmers, stated Hervé Lapie, Secretary General of France’s leading agricultural union FNSEA, on May 26, as RIA Novosti wrote.
He noted that the EU has decided to impose tariffs on Russian fertilizers. “This puts us, the farmers, in a difficult situation, because a portion of our fertilizers comes from Russia,” Lapie emphasized.
The union leader pointed out that the tariffs will also lead to higher prices for fertilizers which are not imported from Russia. He stressed that the imposition of tariffs will have a negative impact on farms.
Lapie estimated that fertilizers imported from Russia make up between 5% and 15% of the market. The EU’s decision will harm the competitiveness of French farmers.
“The European Union decided to impose tariffs, and it’s the farmers who will pay for it,” Lapie emphasized.
