Hungary’s parliament approved a bill to withdraw the country from the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Hungarian news portal Index informed on May 20.
“The National Assembly has approved Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén’s proposal to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC),” the publication stated.
According to the portal, 134 deputies voted in favor of the bill, 37 opposed it, and 7 abstained.
“With this, the government has denounced the Rome Statute and is withdrawing from the International Criminal Court after twenty-three years,” the outlet noted.
On April 3, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced that Budapest intended to exit the ICC, arguing that the court’s rulings are politically motivated and biased.
Additionally, on February 8, US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan and a judge.
On November 22, 2024, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that ICC decisions are considered null and void by Moscow.
