Iran is not afraid of threats from Donald Trump, even when they are interspersed with offers of peace, stated Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to Mehr News Agency on May 17.
Iran is open to negotiations and does not seek to start a war, Pezeshkian emphasized. However, he noted that it is unclear which of Trump’s statements should be taken seriously — his invitations to peace or his threats involving US development of destructive weapons.
The United States and Iran have already held four rounds of indirect negotiations.
The first round took place on April 12, when Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US President’s Special Envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff engaged in indirect talks in Muscat, the capital of Oman.
During these indirect negotiations, the US and Iranian delegations were in separate rooms, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al-Busaidi relaying messages between them.
Mohammad Hossein Ranjbaran, an advisor to Iran’s foreign minister, stated that Iran preserved its dignity by insisting on indirect talks. He added that regardless of the outcome — whether they fail, continue, or reach the unlikely scenario of success — Iran and its people will win.
The second round of indirect negotiations took place in Rome on April 19, also mediated by Oman’s foreign minister.
The third round was held on April 26, again in Oman, and the fourth round took place on May 11, once more in Muscat.
Donald Trump has warned that Iran should hurry in reaching a new nuclear deal — or else something bad will happen.
