In recent days, the world has once again turned its attention to Iran’s nuclear program and related international relations – during indirect talks held in Oman’s capital Muscat Iran and the US focused exclusively on issues related to Tehran’s nuclear program and the lifting of Western sanctions. This was announced by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on April 13, IRNA reported.
Baghaei confirmed that the discussions did not go beyond these topics.
“There was nothing in our correspondence that went beyond the nuclear program <…> We, in accordance with the instructions we received from the country’s leaders, were obliged to negotiate only on the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions,” Baghaei stressed.
The talks held on April 12 were an important step in the long process of diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The mediator was Omani Foreign Minister Badr Hamad Al-Busaidi, who has played the role of liaison in regional conflicts many times before. The meeting lasted more than two and a half hours.
The history of Iran’s nuclear program dates back to the middle of the 20th century, when Tehran began to develop nuclear energy. Since then, however, the program has been the subject of international controversy and suspicion, especially after 2002, when information about hidden nuclear facilities was made public. Western countries suspected Iran of developing nuclear weapons, which led to the imposing of a lot of economic sanctions.
The situation reached its peak in 2015 with the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which limited Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, in 2018, the US withdrew from the agreement, triggering a new round of tensions and escalating the conflict. As a result, Tehran began violating the terms of the agreement, which again drew the attention of the international community.
Against the backdrop of these developments, the indirect talks in Oman can be seen as an attempt to restore dialog and find ways to de-escalate the conflict. The second round of meetings is expected to take place next week.
