Kurginyan: Islamism like virus easily infected post-Soviet Central Asia

10.04.2025, Moscow.

Radical Islamism is perfectly suitable for consumption by half-civilized people, which formed a majority in the Central Asian cities in the period of regress after the collapse of the USSR, the leader of the Essence of Time movement, political scientist and philosopher Sergey Kurginyan said on March 21 on the program Conversation with a Sage on radio Zvezda.

According to the political scientist, the modernization of Central Asia and Caucasus by the Soviet Union “surprisingly easily” withdrew in the post-Soviet period releasing archaic features of the population in these former republics of the USSR.

Kurginyan referred to Tashkent, where cultural delicacy began to be replaced with regress in the post-Soviet time, to certain extent due to relocation of large masses of the population. The political scientist pointed out similar processes in the other Central Asian republics, in Azerbaijan, in Ukraine, and in the Baltic States.

“A different kind of contingents began to come down from the hills or from elsewhere. And these contingents cannot interiorize in principle the great Islamic religion in its most advanced versions. But these versions cannot be ruled out. They include great Sufi movements, great educated Islam,” Sergey Kurginyan said.

According to him, the great Islam, which can perfectly co-exist with secular statehood, a modernized Islam, a modernized Christianity, a modernized Buddhism seemingly cannot be kept in the surrogate archaicism.

“But this happens, because the new contingents of regressive population cannot handle anything complicated, while radical Islamism is perfect for feeding it to a half-civilized, half-modernized person,” Kurginyan noted.

“This is a mixture of archaicism and modernization (pseudo- modernization and pseudo-archaicism) which is perfectly absorbed. I would say it is like COVID. This is a sort of an artificial virus which is supposed to infect very quickly,” the leader of Essence of Time explained.
