Kurginyan explains how to appraise Russia’s actions in Syria

03.04.2025, Moscow.

The assessment of Russia’s actions in Syria should not be limited to concrete policy; it must be examined in the context of the current state of contemporary Russia, political scientist, philosopher, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan wrote in his analytical article “On the Verge of Catastrophe”, published in The Essence of Time newspaper, issue 624.

The political scientist warned against evaluating Russia’s actions in relation to Syria in the context of a concrete policy. The expert explained that such approach immediately excludes the issue of subjectivity.

The question is: What is Russia, which is supposed to act one way or another?’” the leader of the Essence of Time movement clarified.

For certain reasons, Russia gave up its positions in Syria in favor of Turkey and is strengthening its relations with Turkey, Sergey Kurginyan noted.

“Yes, due to certain circumstances, it is obvious that the Russian elite is ingratiating itself with Turkey. Moreover, there is a clear similarity between the way it was ingratiating itself with Europe up to a certain point, and the way it is now ingratiating itself with the US, he said.

At the same time, the political scientist emphasized that atrocious processes unfolding in Syria are in many ways reminiscent of the situation at the early 20th century, and this, according to him, is “a very familiar pattern.” Kurginyan added that this will have catastrophic consequences for both Russia and the world.

But can Russia in its current state interfere in this kind of situation? Russia’s current state is quite obvious, first it drove itself to the brink, ingratiating itself with Europe and the US.

It is clear that the Russian elite will further aggravate this process while ingratiating itself with Turkey. But can Russia do anything, being as it is?” the political scientist said urging a deeper reflection on the matter of Russia’s identity.
