Euractiv: EU is not going to ease sanctions against Russia

27.03.2025, Brussels.

A decision on easing EU sanctions against Russia will not be made before they expire at the end of July, Euractiv reported on March 27, citing an EU diplomat.

According to the diplomat, who did not give his name, there are no plans to ease any sanctions against Russia at the upcoming meeting in July. “We will work to ensure that nothing changes because … Russia’s objectives have not changed,” he told Euractiv.

At the Riyadh talks, the US reached some agreements with Ukraine and Russia on safe navigation in the Black Sea and suspending attacks against energy facilities, with Washington promising to help lift some anti-Russian sanctions. However, the European Union said it only intends to strengthen sanctions against Russia.

The Kremlin’s final statement on the outcome of the talks between the Russian and US contact groups in Riyadh said that the implementation of agreements on the Black Sea deal and the suspension of attacks on energy facilities is possible only if a number of sanctions restrictions are lifted from Russia.

In particular, one of the conditions is the removal of sanctions restrictions from Rosselkhozbank and its connection to SWIFT. Restrictions on servicing Russian-flagged vessels involved in food and fertilizer trade in ports, as well as on supplies of agricultural machinery and other goods involved in food and fertilizer production to Russia, should also be lifted.
