Preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity was named as the main task by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani in a telephone conversation on the Syrian problem, the Kremlin press service reported on March 21.
“In exchanging views on the situation in Syria, both sides noted the importance of ensuring its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the press service said.
It is reported that the sides expressed their desire to work together on the unity of the Syrian Republic, to interact on issues of stabilizing the socio-economic situation in Syria during the transition period, as well as “to provide humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people.”
In early March, the number of civilians killed in fierce clashes in western Syria between Syrian security forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (organization banned in Russia) and fighters affiliated with the former Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad, calling themselves the Coastal Shield Force, rose from 532 to 830.
Syria’s new head of state, Ahmed al-Sharaa, accused foreign-backed pro-Assad groups of unleashing bloodshed to foment unrest and create communal discord. At the same time, Syria’s new head of state acknowledged that revenge killings had followed. And promised punishments according to the law.
