The United States is pushing the world toward a sharp increase in the number of states possessing nuclear weapons and toward war among them, Defense One wrote on March 16.
The new U.S. course in defense alliances foreshadows the end of the nuclear non-proliferation regime. According to an article titled The End of Nonproliferation?, the main reason Germany, Japan, South Korea, and other states did not develop their own nuclear forces was the US commitment to their security. Now that the United States has weakened, compromised, or rejected these commitments, the rationale for non-proliferation disappeared.
According to the article’s authors, one could now expect a rapid increase in the number of states possessing nuclear weapons, leading to greater instability, insecurity, and conflict.
According to Defense One, former US allies are seeking ways to ensure their security by forming new alliances and developing nuclear weapons, while US adversaries and former adversaries are taking advantage of this to expand their power. the authors conclude that the most likely outcome of this will be a a spike in nuclear-armed states. This may have unintended consequences up to hot war.
