Holding presidential elections in Ukraine under the conditions of non-recognition of changes to its territory will lead to the illegitimacy of the elected person, philosopher, political scientist and leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan said on February 21 on the Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio channel.
Kurginyan pointed out that the team of US President Donald Trump, while discussing settling the Ukrainian conflict, talks about the need to hold presidential elections in Ukraine. This issue sounds like the preconditions of the agreements between Russia and the United States.
“So, in order for all this to start, Mr. Zelensky should, so to speak, announce elections. On what territory? Well, on what territory?” the analyst posed a question.
He pointed out that in Donetsk and Lugansk (as well as in other new territories of Russia) people cannot participate in such elections. “There is Constitution of Russia, according to this Constitution, this is the territory of Russia. Why will it vote for this or that leader of Ukraine? It is no longer part of Ukraine,” Kurginyan emphasized.
“But according to the Constitution of Ukraine, it is part of Ukraine. And what will happen?” he posed a question.
At the same time, the political scientist expressed hope that there are “no such insane persons” in Russia who would suggest that residents of the new Russian regions vote for this or other candidate in Ukrainian elections. “This can’t happen. This is a violation of Russia’s Constitution,” he noted.
On the other hand, if people in territories that Ukraine considers its own do not participate in the elections, Ukraine’s Constitution is violated. “So, whoever is elected in violation of the constitution, he is illegitimate,” the political scientist stressed the conflict with the possibility of organizing elections for the Ukrainian president.
“The last somehow legitimate is Zelensky. And then what? And if it is illegitimate and signs any agreements, then these agreements do not worth the paper they are written on,” Kurginyan concluded.
