Media: Trump may shut down US naval base in Greece

24.02.2025, Athens.

The US government raised the question of the necessity of maintaining a naval base in the Greek city of Alexandroupolis, the Greek newspaper Demokratia stated on February 23.

The authors of the article claim that US President Donald Trump is allegedly acting in the interests of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. According to the authors, this would allow Turkey to virtually single-handedly control the Bosporus and, consequently, the passage of military and commercial vessels into the Black Sea, “which Kiev and Moscow seem not to oppose.”

The authors believe that since the base is used to transfer troops to Ukraine, Moscow would support such a decision. They wrote that Greece would thus lose its “shield” against Turkey.

Additionally, Greek experts fear that Trump may withdraw from NATO, which would lead to its transformation from a North Atlantic alliance into a European one.
