Ethiopian Ambassador: Ethiopia plans to begin assembling Lada electric vehicles

06.02.2025, Moscow.

The Ethiopian government and AvtoVAZ are planning to launch electric vehicle production in Africa under the Lada brand, Ethiopian Ambassador to Moscow Genet Teshome Jirru stated on February 6, as reported by TASS.

“Regarding Lada, the Ethiopian government’s policy is currently focused on the use of electric vehicles, especially in the passenger car segment. That’s why it is important for us that Lada is now considering transitioning to EV production,” the ambassador said.

According to him, the Russian manufacturer could begin producing electric vehicles in Ethiopia by the end of the year. He added that Lada cars are already commonly seen on Ethiopian roads, particularly in the taxi sector.

“These cars won’t need extra advertising because they are already well known in the Ethiopian market,” the diplomat noted, adding that classic Zhiguli models are still in use by Ethiopian drivers.

In 2025, AvtoVAZ plans to launch Lada production in Tarboul, Egypt, with a projected annual output of 50,000–70,000 vehicles.
