Top EU General advocates for the creation of unified European army

01.02.2025, Brussels.

The Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), General Robert Brieger, called for the creation of a unified European army, as reported by the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on February 1.

“An EU army would certainly make sense in the long term, given the numerous security challenges in the world and in our immediate surroundings. However, this must be initiated by politicians,” Brieger told the publication.

The Austrian general, who oversees the chiefs of defense of the 27 EU member states, justified his demand by stating that a unified army would be more efficient and effective militarily than a coalition army, which consists of armed forces formed by different states, as is currently the case in the EU.

“Coalition armies always face certain coordination challenges and efficiency losses, which arise, for example, from differences in military culture or varying weapon systems. This would likely not happen in an EU army,” explained the military official.

On Monday, the heads of state and government of the European Union will gather in Brussels. The main topic of discussion will be the creation of a European Defense Union.
