Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced his decision to step down, Večernje novosti wrote on January 28.
“The Serbian Prime Minister, Miloš Vučević, will resign. Vučević will hold an emergency press conference today at 11:00 a.m.,” the announcement stated.
During his address, Vučević confirmed his resignation, linking the decision to the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, where a platform canopy collapse resulted in numerous casualties.
Mass student and opposition protests began almost immediately after the tragedy. Demonstrators demanded the release of all documents related to the investigation.
Vučević emphasized that the investigation was completed in record time. As a result, charges were filed, and two ministers resigned.
“Two ministers resigned, charges were filed in record time, and it was demonstrated that no one was protected. As a government, we tried to publish everything the protesters requested from the documents,” Vučević said in his statement.
On November 1, 2024, a platform canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station, killing 14 people, including a six-year-old boy. Among the victims was a citizen of North Macedonia, while the rest were Serbian nationals.
Vučević has served as prime minister since May 2024.
