German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called US President Donald Trump’s new term in office a “challenge” at a meeting with Emmanuel Macron in Paris, the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported on January 22.
“President Trump, which is already clear, will be a challenge,” Scholz said at a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Wednesday. “Europe will not evade and hide, but will be a constructive and confident partner,” the German chancellor added.
Scholz explained that he wants to “analyze in detail the decisions that Trump has already taken, together with our European partners.” With Trump’s second term in office, Germany and France must more than ever “play their part in strengthening a united, strong and sovereign Europe,” Macron noted.
“A Europe, that adheres to the transatlantic partnership, also knows how to defend its own interests,” the French president added. “We both promote the Franco-German agenda for competitiveness and growth in the European Union,” Scholz emphasized.
Scholz called on the EU Commission to urgently organize a European steel summit. “European steel needs more protection,” the Chancellor emphasized.
In addition, according to Scholz, it is necessary to accelerate the reduction of bureaucracy, for example by suspending the next phase of corporate sustainability reporting for two years. Macron supported Scholz’s position.
“We are definitely in line for an ambitious competition policy,” the French president said, and also mentioned cutting bureaucracy and supporting critical sectors such as the automotive, steel and chemical industries.
