Russian authorities plan to legally seize assets of unfriendly countries

21.01.2025, Moscow.

The Russian authorities intend to pass a law allowing the seizure of assets belonging to residents of unfriendly countries that have, in essence, confiscated Russian assets, Izvestia stated on January 21, citing government sources.

The report states that the draft of the new law has been nearly finalized in collaboration with the Central Bank, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Economic Development, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Russian State Duma could consider the bill within a few days.

According to experts cited by the newspaper, the law could enable the confiscation of “any assets linked to unfriendly states, including real estate, shares in Russian companies, bank accounts, as well as equipment or infrastructure facilities owned by foreign investors.”
