Greenlandic politician proposes a win-win deal to Trump

Greenland called on the United States to support the island’s sovereignty. On January 19, Pele Broberg, a member of the Greenlandic parliament, chairman of the largest opposition party Naleraq, and former foreign minister of the island, made this statement in an interview with the German publication Deutschland-Kurier.

“I sincerely hope that if we achieve independence in the near future thanks to Trump, all countries will also support our accession to the United Nations as a member state,” Broberg said.

He explained that if US President-elect Donald Trump were to assist in securing Greenland’s sovereignty, the island would sign a defense agreement with the United States. Broberg described this scenario as “win-win” for both countries.

A member of the ruling coalition party Siumut, Kuno Fencker, recently stated that Greenland’s government is planning to conclude a new defense agreement with the United States, bypassing Denmark.

Earlier, Pele Broberg also noted that 75% of Greenland’s population supports independence from Denmark.
