Trump’s plan regarding Greenland is a continuation of the Monroe Doctrine. Opinion

The idea proposed by US President-elect Donald Trump to purchase Greenland is a logical extension of the Monroe Doctrine, commented Lev Korovin, an analyst at Rossa Primavera News Agency, on January 9.

“Trump may sometimes act eccentrically, but he is no fool – especially when it comes to saying what his audience wants to hear. His statement about buying Greenland is entirely in line with the longstanding US view of its geopolitical destiny stemming from the Monroe Doctrine. It’s essentially a declaration that the Western Hemisphere is an exclusive sphere of US interests,” Korovin stated.

He recalled earlier instances in US history, such as the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, where the US acquired one-third of its current territory from France. Similarly, Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire at an opportune moment.

“This is not just pragmatism,” Korovin noted. “Since the early 19th century, the US has been intending to push European powers out of the Western Hemisphere and assert dominance over the American continent. In this sense, Trump’s proposal is not radical but rather aligns with Washington’s longstanding geopolitical traditions.”

In 1823 , the 5th president of the United States James Monroe put forward the concept of pushing European colonial states out of the American continent as the axial element of the US geopolitical strategy. This is the essence of the Monroe Doctrine.
