Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has outlined the possibility of a joint military operation against Kurdish militias that have become active in Syria, Turkish newspaper Hürriyet reported on January 8.
This will be done if the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) People’s Self-Defense Units and the closely related Kurdish Self-Defense Units in Syria (YPG), which became active late last year, do not lay down their arms. The operation will take place in conjunction with the forces of the current Syrian authorities.
Turkey and the new Syrian administration established after the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad do not want the presence of the PKK-YPG in their territories, according to the publication.
Ankara “does not agree with the disintegration of Syria and the deterioration of its unitary structure and we may come suddenly one night,” Erdogan said in a speech after a Turkish cabinet meeting, the first this year.
