Yeni Şafak: Israel may try to seize Syria up to Damascus

07.01.2024, Ankara.

Israel may try to seize Syria up to Damascus to prevent Turkey from strengthening in the region, journalists wrote in an article published in the pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak.

“Israel could occupy Damascus to create maneuvering space for the PKK and SNC (Kurdish armed groups) by diverting Turkey’s attention away from them,” Yeni Şafak pointed out.

According to the authors of the article, such ideas are allegedly part of a joint plan with the US to create a “terrorist belt from Iran to the Mediterranean” around Turkey.

Before that, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened a direct military operation in Syria in response to attempts to support those whom Ankara calls terrorists. First of all, he meant the Kurds.

Israel, together with Turkey, the United States and other Western countries provided direct assistance to Islamist groups in the capture of Syria. At the same time, Israeli troops occupied part of the country’s territory.
