The Russian Navy gets 38 new ships in 2024

01.01.2025, Moscow.

The Russian Navy has received 38 new ships, including nuclear-powered submarines and small missile ships. This was part of the fleet renewal program to strengthen the country’s defense capability, Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov said, Izvestia reported on January 1.

The Russian Navy continues to regain its position after a decline in shipbuilding rates in the 1990s. Key combat units have been added to the fleet this year. Among them is the Project 677 non-nuclear submarine Kronstadt, which, after five years of testing, became part of the Northern Fleet. Project 677 is considered to be a complex project due to long development and testing stages, but its submarines are equipped with modern Kalibr missile systems.

Along with that, the Project 636 Yakutsk boat for the Pacific Fleet was commissioned on October 11, and the Project 885M Arkhangelsk nuclear submarine armed with Kalibr-PL and Oniks missiles began its service on December 27. Also this year, the strategic submarine Knyaz Pozharsky was taken out of the boathouse, and its trials are expected to be completed in June 2025.

Large surface ships have also joined the fleet. A frigate of Project 22350 “Soviet Union Fleet Admiral Isakov”, which is capable of carrying hypersonic missiles “Zirkon”, was launched at “Severnaya Verf”. The second corvette of Project 20385 Provorny is prepared for shipment to Kamchatka, despite previous fire damage. Testing of the “Ivan Papanin” icebreaker patrol ship is completed for Arctic missions.

Small combat units such as patrol ships and minesweepers are also being built actively. For example, the patrol ship Viktor Velikiy was launched on May 7, and work on a new minesweeper with underwater robots has begun in Zelenodolsk. In addition, small missile ships of 21631 and 22800 series continue to join the fleet.

The Auxiliary Fleet received new tankers and tugs. Icebreakers, including the Evpatiy Kolovrat, were delivered to the Baltic Shipyard to support the work of Kamchatka units. The oceanographic vessel Almaz for underwater research is being completed. All these measures have allowed the Russian Navy to significantly strengthen and increase its activity on the world’s seas.
