Experts from Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) suggested that Moldovan President Maia Sandu might initiate a military operation to establish control over Transnistria, reported the agency’s press service on December 23.
The SVR noted that Sandu’s behavior during a recent meeting with the Moldovan government concerning the country’s energy security indicated her emotional instability. Following a report by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, which highlighted potential energy supply issues once the Russia-Ukraine gas transit agreement ends in late 2024, Sandu reportedly “lost her temper.”
The Moldovan president allegedly stated, “If Moscow does not find a way to deliver gas here, then Kishinyov will retaliate against pro-Russian Transnistria.” Additionally, she ordered the initiation of criminal proceedings against the leadership of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) on charges of separatism and mandated thorough inspections of ordinary Transnistrian residents at border crossings.
The SVR added that the meeting, during which Sandu “lost her temper,” concluded with her calling for developing a military operation plan to establish control over Transnistria and eliminate the Russian peacekeeping presence in the region.
Such statements from the Moldovan president have raised concerns among EU officials, according to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service. The agency noted that Brussels is “not yet prepared” for military actions in Transnistria.
