The construction of the Rasht-Astara railway segment is one of the priorities for the Iranian government, stated President of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian during a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Savelyev on December 23, according to the politician’s press service.
“The government of Iran places special emphasis on the implementation of the agreement” between Moscow and Tehran. The Minister of Roads and Urban Development Farzaneh Sadegh holds personal responsibility for the project.

In 2023, the countries signed an agreement on the joint construction of the Rasht-Astara railway segment. This segment will connect the land portions of the international North-South Transport Corridor, increasing the efficiency of the route.
The project’s cost is estimated at 1.6 billion euros, with Moscow contributing 1.3 billion euros.
