The country’s political elite, who cherished illusions about the possibility of becoming part of the “civilized world,” assisted in the destruction of the Soviet Union, stated Russian President Vladimir Putin in a video interview published on December 22 on journalist Zarubin’s Telegram channel.
“In our recent history, we experienced a period when our previous generation of politicians, in my view, went as far as to destroy their own country in the hope that Russia would become part of the so-called civilized world,” said Vladimir Putin.
In assessing the relationship between Russia and Europe, the Russian president touched on historical events starting with the Crimean War, which he referred to as the “zero world war,” and the events of subsequent wars. By “civilized world,” he means the collective West, with which Russia has complex relations.
It was noted that the civilized world only seeks to weaken Russia. The history of Russia’s relations with the West shows that whenever Russia’s strength diminishes, Western countries try to finish it off.
With regret, Vladimir Putin noted that hopes for the West’s recognition of Russia as an equal partner were not fulfilled.
Numerous and unjustified political concessions preceding the collapse of the USSR were unilateral. For example, the dissolution of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance, which destroyed an alternative system of labor division to the Western system, and the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, which destroyed NATO’s alternative in Europe.
There were also direct territorial concessions. For example, part of the Bering Sea was transferred from the USSR to the USA. These actions caused direct political and material damage to Russia.
The destruction of the USSR also occurred against the will of the peoples of the USSR. The decisions leading to its destruction, such as the Belovezha Accords, violated the laws in force at the time.
