Bulgaria is building barracks to house a NATO brigade

14.12.2024, Sofia.

A complex of facilities to house a NATO multinational combat team will be built in southeastern Bulgaria, Bulgarian Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov said on December 14, the Bulgarian News Agency informed.

The minister said that the brigade will be located in the Kabile military district near the town of Yambol. The number of its personnel will be about 3,000 and their barracks will be located near other barracks in the district.

Zapryanov emphasized that only residential, training and sports facilities are being built to accommodate the brigade, while ammunition depots will be located elsewhere, away from the barracks and settlements.

According to the minister, “there are no plans to store ammunition or other hazardous materials on the barracks’ territory itself.”

As for the financing of the facility’s infrastructure, negotiations are currently underway with the NATO leadership, upon completion of which the project’s cost will be determined.

In the spring of 2024, local residents collected about 3,000 signatures against establishing a multinational NATO battle group in the area of Yambol.

At the end of 2021, the head of the Bulgarian Defense Ministry said that the country’s authorities do not plan to deploy additional NATO contingents on its territory.
