Contacts with all political powers in Syria are supported by the Russian side, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova confirmed by commenting to TASS on December 11.
Zakharova was responding to a question whether contacts have been established with the new Syrian authorities. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman emphasized that the agency had already reported about establishing such contacts.
“As you may have noticed, the statement that was published recently says that we maintain contacts with all political powers that are now in Syria,” Zakharova replied.
On December 8, the Russian Foreign Ministry made an official statement in connection with the situation in Syria. It said that as a result of negotiations between Bashar al-Assad and a number of participants in the armed conflict on the territory of Syria, he decided to resign from the presidency and left the country, giving instructions to carry out the transfer of power peacefully. Russia did not participate in these talks.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, “Russian Federation is in contact with all groups of the Syrian opposition.” The Russian Foreign Ministry also called on all parties involved to solve the issues of governance in a political way.
