Slovak authorities expelled members of a cell that could have prepared terrorist attacks on critical infrastructure facilities in Slovakia to Ukraine and Hungary, the head of the Slovak Interior Ministry, Matus Szutaj-Eštok, said on December 2 in a video message published on one of the social networks.

Earlier on November 26, a Ukrainian citizen was detained in the eastern Slovak town of Michalovce. Later, the head of the Slovak Information Service (intelligence service) Pavol Gašpar said that the detainee could have been involved in a group whose activities could have been planning sabotage at critical infrastructure facilities of the Republic.

Later, it was reported that another person had been detained. According to the Markíza TV channel, the members of the roup could have been preparing a terrorist act on the Druzhba oil pipeline.

“The investigation of the case from eastern Slovakia is ongoing, the suspects have been detained, steps have been taken to ensure that they do not pose a threat to Slovakia. One of them was deported to Hungary, the other was immediately handed over to the competent authorities in Ukraine as part of the expulsion,” Šutaj-Eštok said.

According to the head of the Slovak Interior Ministry, the special operation in the east of the country was carried out to check the activities of two foreigners and one Slovak citizen, with which there were “real suspicions of possible preparation of an attack consisting in the destruction or disabling of an important energy facility, namely a gas or oil pipeline.”

According to law enforcers, the detainees monitored various objects of the country’s critical infrastructure with the help of drones. Numerous phones, laptops, signal-jamming devices, thermal cameras, and maps were seized during the investigation.
