Russia responds to US actions in connection with the Oreshnik system and compliance with START treaty

25.11.2024, Moscow.

The deployment of the Oreshnik system is not subject to restrictions under international agreements, said Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov on November 25 during a press conference.

He also did not rule out the possibility of deploying medium and shorter-range missiles in the Asia region as a response to the US actions.

Ryabkov also emphasized that using Oreshnik does not contradict the restrictions under the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) agreement, and Russia continues to comply with its terms. The US did not contact Russia after testing this missile.

According to him, the memorandum between Russia and the US concerning missile launches remains in force. Within the framework of this agreement, Washington was notified regarding the test launch of the Oreshnik system.

As for questions on the possibility of the US military bases becoming Russian targets in the event of a conflict, Ryabkov responded that elements of US tactical nuclear weapon systems in Europe are not excluded from consideration.
