Putin says Zelensky’s legitimacy as president is over

24.05.2024, Minsk.

The legitimacy of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky is over, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a press conference following his talks with his Belarusian counterpart Aleksandr Lukashenko on May 24.

Putin emphasized that the question of legitimacy should be answered in Ukraine itself. To do this, one should consult the state’s Constitution, said Putin. Then, it will be clear which authorities have the right to be extended.

Western countries are trying to present Zelensky as a legitimate president despite the official expiration of his term in office. For example, on 21 May, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that Vladimir Zelensky was the legitimate head of Ukraine despite the fact that his term of office in the country had expired.

Zielensky’s presidential term expired on May 20. According to the constitution, the election of a new head of state should have been held on March 31, but it was canceled citing martial law.
