The leader of the German CDU party Friedrich Merz advocated negotiations on a European nuclear umbrella and did not rule out the possibility of Germany developing its own nuclear weapons, the news portal Berlin 24/7 wrote on March 16.
The publication reports that the German politician recalled in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that France had earlier initiated a dialog on European nuclear security, but Germany had refused to discuss it at that time.
“I would like to see this strategic dialog in Europe. Such a dialog should be conducted with both France and the UK. We have to ask our partners: what are you willing to share? What do you expect from us? And what will the decision-making mechanisms look like?”, Merz said.
According to the news portal, when asked about its own nuclear weapons for Germany, the German politician gave a vague answer, saying that “two years ago we couldn’t imagine what we have to talk about today, and today we can’t imagine what we might have to talk about tomorrow.”
It is also noted that the CDU leader believes that French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski’s considerations regarding sending European troops to Ukraine cannot be unconditionally ruled out.
