Russian flotilla arrives at Chabahar Port for Russian-Iranian exercises

The Russian Pacific Fleet’s missile cruiser Varyag arrived in the Iranian port of Chahbehar to participate in the Maritime Security Belt 2024 exercise, the Russian Defense Ministry said on March 11.

Both Russian ships and Iranian and Chinese flotillas will take part in the exercise. Representatives of the navies of Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Oman, India and South Africa will also join them.

The joint naval exercises in the Sea of Oman aim to ensure the security of maritime economic activities.

The Pacific Fleet missile cruiser Varyag, the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov, two warships and a supply ship of the Chinese Navy, and ships and helicopters of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Navy will participate in the exercises.

Iran’s IRNA news agency wrote that the main stage of the joint Maritime Security Belt 2024 exercise with the participation of the navies of Iran, China and Russia will begin on March 12 in the Indian Ocean.

The exercise is aimed at strengthening security in the region, as well as enhancing multilateral cooperation between the participating countries to demonstrate their ability to jointly maintain world peace and maritime security.

Other objectives include strengthening the security of international maritime trade, combating piracy and maritime terrorism, humanitarian measures, exchange of information in the field of maritime rescue, and exchange of operational and tactical experience.
