Sweden, despite having joined NATO, does not want the alliance’s permanent bases to be located on its territory, the kingdom’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Tobias Billström said in an interview with Turkey’s Anadolu Ajansı news agency published on March 12.
“Of course, NATO troops will operate in Sweden. However, we do not want permanent bases,” he said.
Billström added that Sweden could send its troops to the allied countries if necessary. A mechanized battalion is being prepared to be sent to Latvia. When asked about the readiness to deploy nuclear weapons on the kingdom’s territory, the minister said that Stockholm sees no grounds for this.
“No member state of the alliance is obliged to station nuclear weapons against its will,” he added.
Sweden was admitted to NATO on March 7. The UK’s newspaper Financial Times said on this occasion that this country could become a logistical hub for the alliance in case of war with Russia, as it would be convenient to transfer troops and weapons to the Baltic states through it
