Lavrov explains what steps could lead to peace in the Middle East

29.02.2024, Moscow.

Only the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders can ensure peace in the Middle East region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at an inter-Palestinian meeting in Moscow on February 29.

According to the minister, what is happening in Gaza is yet another proof of Moscow’s statements about the inevitability of outbreaks of violence in the region until the cause of the long-standing conflict is eliminated. This is about the establishment of a Palestinian state in accordance with the decisions of the Security Council and the UN General Assembly, he added.

“The Palestinians must realize their right to establish a state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Only such an approach – fair, based on international law – can lead to sustainable peace in the region,” the foreign minister emphasized.

Lavrov has repeatedly expressed the need for a Palestinian state and emphasized that the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly have also repeatedly expressed the need for such a state.

He also noted that the United States has consistently blocked initiatives in the UN Security Council calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and steering the dialog away from the creation of a Palestinian state.
