Kremlin comments on Canada’s refusal to extradite Ukrainian SS fighter Hunko

14.02.2024, Moscow.

The Kremlin expected Canada’s refusal to extradite Ukrainian SS fighter Hunko, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 14, speaking at a briefing with reporters.

“Such a response was expected,” Peskov said when asked to assess the Canadian authorities’ refusal.

On September 22, 2023, 98-year-old Hunko, who served in the SS Division Galicia (organization banned in Russia) during  World War II, was invited to a session of the Canadian Parliament. This visit was timed to coincide with a visit to Parliament by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.

This situation caused an international scandal, as a result of which Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was forced to recognize the event with the visit of an elderly Nazi as a “disgrace”.

On February 13, an anti-fascist organization in Israel demanded the extradition of the Ukrainian SS fighter from Canada. Russia demanded Canada extradite Hunko at the end of December 2023. Yesterday, the Canadian authorities refused to do so to Russia.
