Kurginyan: Crusaders fought for the tomb of the Lord, and against Byzantium

28.12.2023, Aleksandrovskoye.

At some point, the crusaders took up arms against Christians in the Byzantine Empire instead of rallying in the struggle against Muslims, recalled the political scientist, philosopher, the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on December 14 in Conversation with a Sage program on the Zvezda radio.

The struggle between European crusader knights and Byzantium, whose successor later became Rus’, Sergey Kurginyan describes as an example of a long-standing roots of the animosity between the West and Russia.

There were so-called crusades – for the tomb of the Lord, for the assertion of Christianity on the Holy Land, for the Christian Kingdom of Godfrey of Bouillon in Jerusalem and others. And the crusaders came with these ideas, and sacrificed themselves, and lived in austerity, and established orders, explained the analyst.

However, European knights, while protecting the Christian faith, attacked other Christians who lived in Byzantium with particular force and passion, recalled the philosopher.

Why did they rob Byzantium? Why did they go to defend Christianity and suddenly turned against this vulnerable Byzantium and began to rob it? What happened? Where did this hatred suddenly come from? “ – asked Sergey Kurginyan.

He explained that “paradoxically, the clot of incredible energy was thrown against their own (the Byzantine Empire), at the moment when they, the Crusaders, had to be directing it against the strangers.”

This is a practical case when “one of their own, who professes something unacceptable, is worse than any stranger”, emphasized Sergey Kurginyan.

He added that similar examples are the campaigns of crusader knights against Orthodox Rus’, including the battles with Alexander Nevsky.

In 1204, the liberators of the Holy Sepulcher conquered the Byzantine capital of Constantinople. Having burst into the city, the knights began to rob and destroy palaces, temples and houses.

As a result of battles and fires in Constantinople, many valuable manuscripts and works of art were destroyed. The crusaders even plundered the ancient Temple of the Hagia Sofia. And the church treasures of Byzantium were stolen and taken to European churches.
