German media describes Russia as biggest geopolitical threat to Germany

Russia, China and Iran pose one of the most significant geopolitical threats in 2024 as they seek to undermine US legitimacy, German magazine Focus said in an article published on December 27.

“China, Iran and Russia may have less in common than their Western allies, and China is much larger and more integrated into the global economy than the others, but their interests overlap,” the publication reads.

The article’s authors added that all three countries, in addition to the desire to undermine US hegemony, are also united by the desire to circumvent Western sanctions. It is noted that Russia, China, and Iran actively cooperate, including in the military sphere.

At the same time, the magazine noted the fragility of the Western coalition. The article pointed out that the USA and the EU had been united after Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, but now their enthusiasm has waned, and cracks are appearing in their relations. The split intensified after Israel and Hamas went to war, the paper noted, wondering how the West would react if a conflict broke out in Taiwan.

Rossa Primavera News Agency wrote earlier that German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on December 6 that the country should prepare for war with Russia. He called for spending more on the army and changing the population’s mentality, abandoning tolerance in favor of greater belligerence.

Social survey data published in Germany on December 24 showed that Pistorius has become the most popular politician in the country. 42% of respondents said he should have as much influence in politics as possible.
