Brazilian ambassador: Sanctions are not a problem for trade with Russia

04.12.2023, Moscow.

Brazil is not complying with Western sanctions against Russia, Brazilian Ambassador to Russian Federation Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares told RBK on December 4.

The ambassador said that trade and economic relations between the two countries are successfully developing and emphasized that Brazil complies with the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, and sanctions against Russia are not such a case.

“So for us the issue of sanctions [against Russia – Rossa Primavera News Agency] is not a problem, because we do not comply with them,” Soares noted.

The diplomat noted some difficulties with payment systems, insurance and logistics, but companies in the two countries have overcome these challenges, as shown by bilateral trade reaching record levels.

The price cap on crude oil set by Western countries does not play any significant role for Brazil, as it is one of the largest producers of oil itself, and buys mainly diesel fuel from Russia.

So far, payments between the countries are conducted in US dollars, although the issue of switching to payments in national currencies is being actively discussed.

Currently, the main type of Brazilian exports to Russia is agricultural products. The ambassador noted that there is a potential for the development of trade relations and his country can also supply industrial goods and equipment.
