Ukraine is closer to joining NATO than ever before, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with the Hungarian daily Index on November 28.
“Ukraine is closer to NATO now than ever before, and we will continue to support it in making the necessary reforms on its path to membership,” Stoltenberg said.
The alliance secretary-general specified that all NATO members agreed that Ukraine’s accession should turn from a two-stage process into a one-stage one.
On November 27, Stoltenberg said that all allies agree that full membership of Ukraine is impossible in the midst of hostilities.
On July 12, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said, “We understand that Ukraine cannot become a NATO member while the war is going on.”
On 11 July, Zelenskyy criticized the alliance for the fact that Ukraine was not given a timeframe not only for joining NATO, but also for being invited to join NATO. In addition, the Ukrainian leader expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the alliance put forward conditions that Ukraine should fulfill to be invited to NATO.
