President Vladimir Putin congratulated his fellow citizens on the Day of Reunification of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions with Russia. His address on September 30 was published on the Kremlin website.
The video message is timed to the anniversary of the signing of the treaty on the admission of four new subjects to Russia. The President called this event historic and momentous. According to him, the residents of the LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions made their choice to “be with their Fatherland.”
“This conscious, long-awaited, long-suffering and truly popular decision people made together – during referendums in full compliance with international norms. They showed courage and firm character,” he said.
Putin especially emphasized the circumstances in which the new regions made their choice in favor of Russia. The residents of Donbass were intimidated. The Ukrainian nationalists and their Western patrons tried to deprive them of culture, traditions, native language. These forces organized a coup d’état in Kiev in 2014 and unleashed a full-scale civil war. Putin called those events a terror against dissidents, accompanied by regular shelling and punitive actions in Donbass.
