Turkey actively presses Russia in Central Asia with its “soft power”. Opinion

18.06.2023, Aleksandrovskoye.

Russia is losing influence in Central Asia, giving up the region to Turkey and China, according to a summary from the war theater in the Essence of Time newspaper No. 537.

The Organization of Turkic States (OTS) officially created the Turkic Investment Fund. Members of the fund are Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. Turkey believes it will strengthen Istanbul’s central role in the global financial community.

Director of the Institute of Russian-Slavic Studies named after N.Ya. Danilevsky Alexander Burenkov notes that this is not the only integration direction of the Turkic states and Turkey in recent times. Turkey is strengthening its military cooperation with Central Asian countries, financing joint exploration projects and investing in their economies.

In addition, Turkey is actively promoting pan-Turkic ideas among students in Central Asian countries, encouraging young people from those countries to study in Turkey. Turkey is also actively developing cultural ties within the OTS.

Turkey is not our friend, but at best (!) a fellow traveler with a scimitar behind his back. Russia is losing influence not only in the Caucasus but also in Central Asia, yielding the region to Turkey and China. Is it not because these powers have something to offer local elites (apart from their “direct purchase,” in which our rulers are quite successful), namely, attractive to them meanings. This is what is known as ‘soft power’,” says the editorial in the Essence of Time newspaper.
