Russian Deputy Prime Minister: North-South Transport Corridor becomes alternative to Suez

17.05.2024, Moscow.

The volume of traffic along the North-South transport corridor has grown so rapidly that the route has become a significant alternative to the Suez Canal, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin told journalists on the margins of KazanForum on May 17.

Answering journalists’ questions after the plenary session of the XV International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum”, the politician noted that the trade turnover between Russia and the countries of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation has grown by 30% over the past year, which is a record high.

Khusnullin also noted that the current forum was attended by all the countries of the Persian Gulf and the entire Arab world.

The main question of the participants was the issue of the timing of the North-South transport corridor, which, according to the majority of the forum delegates, is an alternative to the Suez Canal.

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers spoke about the logistical changes that have taken place over the past few years.

Thus, agreements were concluded with Azerbaijan and Iran on the extension of the railroad to the Persian Gulf ports, Turkmenistan opened the construction of a road along the Caspian Sea to Iran and, probably, further to Kazakhstan.

“We and our colleagues from Kazakhstan have also synchronized our construction plans. The road from Kazan to Yekaterinburg is the southeastern direction of the Europe-Western China route,” Khusnullin said.

The politician emphasized that the North-South project is planned for a long period of time.
