Serbian president accuses Pristina of intending to cause a clash between Serbia and NATO

29.05.2023, Belgrad.

Pristina’s goal in the latest unrest is to cause a clash between Serbia and NATO, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said during an address to the Serbian people about the tensions in Kosovo.

“All this is organized by Albin Kurti, with his great desire that there will be a conflict between Serbs and NATO, and he is the only one responsible for what is happening, washes his hands like Pilate and says that it has nothing to do with him,” Vucic said, commenting on the latest unrest.

Earlier, it was reported that large groups of Serbs gathered in front of the local administrative building in the north of the country. The protesters demanded the removal of the Kosovo Albanian mayors and the withdrawal of the Kosovo Force units.

The units of the NATO-led international peacekeeping force in Kosovo KFOR with means to disperse the demonstrations were deployed in the zone of potential conflict. Three locations of NATO peacekeeping forces are reported: the municipalities of Zvecan, Leposavic, and Zubin Potok.

The clashes started, according to different reports, at about 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. In the beginning, the Serbs and the Kosovo police were engaged in the clashes, and then KFOR fighters joined the clashes, who used firearms and stun grenades, as well as tear gas against the Serbs.

The president of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, accused Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić of organizing the riots in the north of the province and attacks on police, the NATO KFOR unit and journalists.

Vucic, for his part, said that the NATO mission, contrary to its duties, did not protect Serbs in the clash with the Kosovo police.
