Young people leave Moldova, old people stay

23.04.2023, Moldova.

40% of young working age population has left Moldova, an economic expert, former deputy of Moldovan Parliament Veaceslav Ioniță said on April 21 in the This is different program at Moldova First TV-channel.

The birth rate of the republic rapidly declines. It is not possible to increase the birth rate by financial instruments. There is also a high level of migration of the population, if earlier people fled from poverty, the second wave of migration is people who seek a higher quality of life, said the expert.

We currently have 40 percent of young people abroad. Old people – only 7%,” Ioniță said.

Moldova is in a severe demographic crisis. According to official data, every year from 30 to 40 thousand people leave the country for good. Every third inhabitant of the republic wants to leave the country to work abroad, and every fourth wants to leave their homeland forever.

Officially, there are about 2.6 million people in the country, and if we take into account those who left to work abroad, there are about 1.5 million citizens in Moldova.
