Regardless how alien Russia is with its current values and political class, we must fight for it to help it survive, said philosopher, political scientist and the leader of the Essence of Time movement Sergey Kurginyan on February 18 on the Right to Know program on the TVC channel.
As the political scientist remembers, after the Supreme Council of the Russian Federation was shelled in 1993, it became perfectly clear to him that Russia was a peripheral, colonial country under foreign control, which had consumerist values, and which had abandoned its “actual, inherent” roots.
He had to decide whether to leave “to go to some Himalayas,” because in France, according to Kurginyan, he “would hang himself on the second day,” or to stay in his home country.
“I realized that I cannot live without this country, no matter what its current condition is, even a single day. I will live in it regardless how alien it is to me, I will fight for it, and I will do everything I can to help it survive,” Kurginyan said.
As an example of how essentially alien to him the post-Soviet country has become, the philosopher told that he was born in Moscow on Malye Kochki street, that he passionately loved Moscow, and that he used to say good-bye to it every time he left for a geological expedition. “[Now] I can hardly stand 12 days here during my theater performances, so alien it has become to me,” Kurginyan explained.
His decision to live in Russia, whatever it is, determined, according to the analyst, his actions during the first war in Chechnya and other events including the protests at the Bolotnaya Square in late 2011 and early 2012. Kurginyan reminded that, when he opened the anti-Bolotnaya rally at Poklonnaya Gora in 2012, he said in his very first phrase that he was against Putin’s policy, but he urged to defend Russia and to wipe out the “orange garbage.”
“I have a tragic necessity to fight for something that is alien to me… And this is my consistent stand,” the leader of the Essence of Time movement concluded.
