MPs in Georgia say that the European Union is not what they have dreamed of

Georgia needs to reconsider the necessity of integration into the European Union, because Europe is not what it used to be. This was stated in a statement of the People’s Power movement, created by members of the Georgian parliament. The statement was published on February 10 on the movement’s Facebook page (organization banned in Russia).

The statement reads that the lawyers of the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, the richest businessman in Georgia, faced censorship in Europe. They published articles in the media about the Credit Suisse management’s refusal to return him hundreds of millions of dollars, despite the fact that the Georgian businessman had won the trial.

“In the European Union, which we dreamed of in the 1990s precisely because of values such as justice, human rights, and freedom of expression, these values have been seriously undermined,” the deputies noted.

The statement points to the fact that lies have become a weapon for pseudo-liberals in Europe, and an overwhelming majority of MEPs supported a resolution calling for the release of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, convicted of actual crimes.

“We see how we are being surrounded by LGBT propaganda, and traditional values are being attacked, how Georgian NGOs funded by the European Union are hostile to our church and the state,” the statement reads.

The deputies called for a broad discussion on Europe’s transformation and prospects for development in Georgia. They said EU membership is of no value if it requires a shift away from media freedom, the rule of law, and traditional values.

The People’s Power movement includes nine members of the Parliament of Georgia, who left the ruling party Georgian Dream. Earlier they had repeatedly accused US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan and other representatives of the West of plans to confront Georgia with Russia.
