German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger calls to prepare for a war of attrition

A solution to the situation in Ukraine cannot be found in a few months, said German diplomat Wolfgang Ischinger, chairman of the annual Munich International Security Conference, and called to prepare for a “war of attrition.” Die Welt newspaper reported about this on January 15.

First and foremost, Ischinger called to continue to arm Ukraine. According to the German diplomat, Ukraine can come to the negotiating table only if it achieves significant success on the battlefield.

In other words, the goal is to prevent any capitulation of Ukraine. Therefore, Ischinger suggests equipping Ukraine with weapons so that it becomes the best prepared, best equipped and strongest military power in Europe.

According to the diplomat, astonishingly much has been achieved in this respect in just a few years since 2014, thanks to training and arms deliveries, primarily from the United States and the United Kingdom.

“If I were a Ukrainian, I would gladly accept security guarantees from the Europeans, but I would not make my future depends on them. First of all, the Americans should give such guarantees,” Ischinger added.

At the same time, the German diplomat stressed once again that Ukraine should not count on joining NATO – it will be difficult in any case. To join the EU, Ukraine will need the consent of all 30 members. Among them, there will always be a state that will show concern about this.
