Germany should more actively seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Ukraine, Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (Christian Democratic Union, CDU) said, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper wrote on December 23.

“It has been a strength of the Federal Republic for decades. Germany has great credibility in the world because it has faced up to its history,” Kretschmer told the dpa news agency in Dresden.

Kretschmer recalled that German chancellors and foreign ministers have remained willing to negotiate in the most difficult conflicts and have helped mediate peace.

“Weapons are not more important than negotiations. Germany has become a reliable negotiating partner because of its attitude to history,” stressed the Saxon head.

According to the politician, the mediation mission is, at the same time, an issue for the European Union, for the Europeans. Kretschmer noted that “the war is going on here [in Europe – Rossa Primavera News Agency, the USA is thousands of kilometers away. Therefore, the task for the Europeans is to find a solution to the conflict.”
